About Inclusive New Media Design

In the video clip on this page, Helen Kennedy talks about Inclusive New Media Design.

On INMD, we want to make sure that people with intellectual disabilities are included in the Web. People with intellectual disabilities are keen web users. But websites are not always built as well as they could be for this group.

Information and guidelines exist to help web designers make websites which work for people with disabilities. But this information often does not talk about the needs of people with intellectual disabilities.

We have run 9 workshops with web designers and developers to train them in this area. 28 web designers and developers came to the workshops, and 3 others talked to us about their work. People with learning disabilities came to 4 of the 9 workshops to work as user testers. They talked to the web designers about what kind of websites they like to use.

Inclusive New Media Design (INMD) was initially a research project, funded by the new-window-green-mini Designing for the 21st Century initiative. Designing for the 21st Century is funded by the new-window-green-miniArts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the new-window-green-miniEngineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
