Helen Kennedy, Project Director

Helen KennedyHelen Kennedy is leading the project, overseeing the project's progression and participating in all aspects of the research. She has experience of the management of new media projects, of research into new media work and disability, and has published widely in new media and cyberculture studies. Simon Evans, Consultant Researcher

Simon EvansSimon Evans is consultant researcher on the project, with over 10 years experience of web development, training and consultancy in new media and disability R&D. Throughout this period he has developed software, elearning resources, websites and other interactive media for adults and children with complex disabilties. Since 2001 he has worked on many commercial and research projects with both The Rix Centre and UEL.

 

Siobhan Thomas, Research Fellow

Siobhan ThomasSiobhan Thomas joined the project in September 2007 to carry out the bulk of the research. She has experience of new media research, for example at the Institute of Education and Southbank University, as well as being an experienced new media designer with knowledge of web accessibility issues.

 

 

Pat Staples, Web Project Manager

Pat StaplesPat Staples, Web Project Manager, will co-ordinate input from The Rix Centre's web development team in the development and maintainance of the project's website. The website will recruit and communicate with participants, demonstrate case studies of good practice and disseminate findings.

 

 

Pippa Sweeney, Administrator

Pippa SweeneyPippa Sweeney is undertaking the project's administrative functions and be responsible for organising the workshops. She has a range of administrative experience, and has also worked in education as a learning support assistant with students with disabilities.

 

 

 

Steering Committee

Inclusive New Media Design will draw on The Rix Centre's expertise through the involvement of its director Andy Minnion as a member of the project's steering committee. This committee will convene quarterly to oversee the progress of the project and provide input into its direction. It will also be comprised of Gavin Poynter, Head of SSMCS at UEL and an expert in the field of new technologies and work processes; and Kevin Carey, Director of the charity humanITy: Inclusion in the Information Age, who has extensive experience of campaigning, speaking and publishing on the subject of digital inclusion for disabled people.

Although serving the needs of people with disabilities should of course be a concern, the far wider issue – that accessibility is a matter of usability – has rarely been discussed. As designer professionals, we should be designing our content so it is globally accessible and meets the needs of as many people as is possible and practical given our specific circumstances, regardless of their abilities or the type of device they choose to access the Web
